Description

Job Overview: The Principal position is primarily responsible for ensuring the academic achievement of all students at high levels, setting instructional direction and developing and managing the school’s academic program, and genuinely and equitably engaging campus stakeholders. The principal supports, develops, and evaluates instructional staff, leads campus-based instructional leadership teams and contributes to the school management team. 

 

The Principal helps lead and implement the school’s strategic plan focused on: Mundo Verde’s Instructional Model for Equity, Talent Engine, Engaging our Community as Crew and enhancing Operational Excellence.

One Principal is assigned to one academy, Lower academy (Pk to 2nd Grade)  and Upper academy ( 3rd. To 5th Grade)  

Reports To and Supervises: With an eye towards upholding the highest of instructional standards, the Principal is supervised directly by the Chief Schools Officer whose job is focused on developing and supporting strong academic leaders, long-range instructional planning and co-creating an overall vision for student success that aligns with our mission. 

The Principal is responsible for the direct supervision of Dean of Academics, Coach In Residence and overall supervision Lead Teachers, Fellows and PK Associates, Recess Team Members.

Responsibilities and Duties

School Mission and Vision

  • Co-develop and implement a shared mission and vision to promote students’ social, emotional, and academic development at the designated campus.
  • Enact and enhance a shared school mission and vision, which clearly defines what the school strives to do and why the school does its work, and how each campus contributes to that vision.
  • Employ methods of continuous improvement, particularly at the campus level to ensure that the school meets its mission and goals.

Student Equity and Inclusion

  • Improve and sustain a school environment that is inclusive, equitable, caring, and culturally competent to promote each student's social, emotional, and academic improvement.
  • Maintain policies, procedures, and practices that safeguard student equity and inclusivity.
  • Confront and continuously improve organizational inclusiveness, equity, and cultural competence.

Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

  • Support and enhance the intellectual rigor and coherence of curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems to promote each student's social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Maintain a rigorous, aligned system of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Lead efforts to evaluate and increase rigor, coherence, impact, and equity of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Supervision and On-Boarding

  • Evaluate and update job descriptions for each supervised position annually.
  • Provide required observations to each supervisee per academic school year.
  • Ensure that a robust instructional on-boarding is in place for all teaching hires that are brought in during the school year. 
  • Conduct intent to return conversations with all supervisees annually. 
  • Provide clear expectations for the relationship between teachers and fellows. 

Professional Culture

  • Foster a professional culture focused on improving the capacity of each educator to promote each student’s social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Support educator talent systems to select, support, and retain highly skilled, committed teachers and staff.
  • Develop the professional capacity of campus personnel through coaching, supervision, and personalized support.
  • Foster improvement of the quality, rigor, and equity of professional support systems.

Community Engagement

  • Engage parents, families, and the community-especially those who are marginalized or traditionally unable to actively participate in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways to promote each student's social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Maintain open communications with stakeholders in the service of students and to advance the school mission.
  • Develop and sustain worthwhile and mutually beneficial partnerships with school stakeholders.

Operational Systems

  • Work in deep collaboration with the campus Operations Manager to strategically manage operational systems that promote each student's social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Coordinate with the Operations Manager to inform campus finances, human resources, and other operational elements of the campus to maximize staff productivity and comply with the law.
  • Work with the Operations Managers to optimize operational systems at the campus.

Professionalism

  • Act ethically, equitably, and according to professional norms to promote each student's social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Model ethical, equitable, and professional behavior.
  • Engage in professional learning.

Other duties as assigned 



Requirements

  • Master’s degree, preferably in education or school administration (or equivalent experience).
  • Three to five years of experience as a teacher of record and two or more years of experience serving in a senior management role (ideally as a principal), required. .
  • Experience with one or more of our core mission components - EL education, language immersion education, or education for sustainability - preferred.
  • Advanced or native proficiency in Spanish and English preferred.
  • Experience in an urban school setting is preferred. 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, strong leadership capabilities, and a commitment to their own learning.
